Braves: Rosario and Matzek have huge nights down on the farm

The Braves have reinforcements on the way, and a couple of key pieces could be less than a week away from joining the team. Last year’s NLCS MVP, Eddie Rosario, has been rehabbing in Gwinnett all week, and on Wednesday he had his best game since returning from laser eye surgery, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Rosario is now 5-for-18 since joining the Stripers. Given that his injury doesn’t come with a risk of re-injury, I could see him in Atlanta this weekend. As long as he’s seeing the ball alright, there is not much of a reason for him to continue playing in AAA for long.

Joining Rosario in Gwinnett on Wednesday was Tyler Matzek. He was supposed to begin his rehab stint with Augusta — the Braves A-ball affiliate — last night, but the game was postponed. That didn’t stop the Braves from promoting him to Gwinnett, though. And like Rosario, I don’t think it will be very long before he’s back in Atlanta either.

Matzek pitched a perfect inning of relief on Wednesday, striking out two batters. Because he is working his way back from shoulder soreness, I don’t expect the Braves to rush him. He will probably pitch a couple of more times with the Stripers. But if he keeps looking like he did on Wednesday, the Braves won’t hesitate to bring him back to Atlanta.
