After spending the last four seasons in Tennessee, Anthony Firkser will play in Atlanta. The Falcons announced on Tuesday the signing of the former Titans tight end.

Hours after proclaiming the Falcons had a sneaky need at the position, Terry Fontenot finds a free agent with a connection to Arthur Smith and Marcus Mariota, who threw Firkser his first touchdown. During his four seasons with the Titans, he recorded 106 receptions for 1,107 yards and five touchdowns in 58 games played.
Before Smith was the Titans’ offensive coordinator, he was Firkser’s position coach in Tennessee. The connection to the head coach and quarterback was certainly a catalyst for the signing. It’s no coincidence Firkser’s most productive year with the Titans came in 2020 with Smith at the helm, when he recorded 39 receptions for 387 yards and one touchdown. It gives Atlanta’s offense a reliable TE2, who will form a formidable duo with Kyle Pitts.
This signing is similar to the rest of the Falcons’ transactions this offseason. Firkser gives Atlanta’s tight end room stability and eliminates the need to select one in the draft. I will say though, he isn’t the best blocking tight end, so I’d expect someone else to fill the void left by Lee Smith.
