Falcons make flurry of roster moves

After signing free agent linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski and trading for receiver Bryan Edwards, the Falcons are back at it, tweaking the roster. The team announced a slew of roster moves Monday morning, which included signing veteran wideout Geronimo Allison, undrafted defensive back Tre Webb, and undrafted tight end Tucker Fisk while parting ways with Chad Hansen, Daniel Helm, and Luther Kirk.

Hansen and Kirk were reserve/futures signings but were clearly seen as expendable. Helm is a blocking-first tight end, but the Falcons drafted John FitzPatrick and signed Anthony Firkser. Helm joins Ryan Becker in being released as Atlanta bolsters the position with other options.

As far as the signings go, Webb is a versatile defensive back who will likely only see the field in the third phase of the game. Fisk is a massive tight end at 6’4” and 287 pounds, but he also has experience playing defensive end, noticing a trend? The Falcons are placing positional versatility at a premium. I’m not quite sure where the Falcons see Fisk playing, but releasing Helm would suggest it’s at tight end.

The most intriguing signing is Allison, who was initially drafted by the Packers in 2016. Spending four seasons in Green Bay, Allison recorded 89 catches for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns. However, the Packers’ receiving core was middling during those times; Allison was mostly relegated to special teams. When he did get his chance to be closer to a full-time starter in 2019, his performance disappointed. Green Bay decided not to bring him back in 2020, and Allison signed with the Lions, where he spent the season on Detroit’s practice squad. It makes sense to take a flyer on Allison; he’s 6’3” and can contribute on special teams.
