Report: Timberwolves discuss trading for Hawks’ Clint Capela

The Hawks are seemingly going to be mentioned in every free agent and trade rumor that surfaces. After all, Travis Schlenk and Tony Ressler have made it clear that there will be roster changes this offseason. Many interpreted that as wholesale changes, but that’s not exactly what the Hawks front office is considering. Upgrading the roster can come in many different forms, and according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the team has discussed a deal with the Timberwolves surrounding Clint Capela.

Minnesota is looking to build around Anthony Edwards and presumably Karl Anthony-Towns, so neither of those players would be included in a potential Capela trade. And outside of D’Angelo Russell, there’s not much on their roster that is appealing. They also only own the 19th overall selection in the draft.

Schlenk could potentially package a few players or picks for a star-caliber player, and this latest rumor is just one facet of the bigger picture. Trading Capela would indicate Atlanta landing another center. Rudy Gobert and DeAndre Ayton have been the hottest names on the market, but acquiring Ben Simmons would also likely mean moving on Capela. Regardless, the Hawks aren’t going to ship one of the best defensive bigs in the Association without a plan to replace him.
